Our Dog Breeding Philosophy

  • One Size Does Not Fit All

Dog breeding is controversial. There are many decisions to be made when adding a dog to your family. Those decisions may lead to adopting from a rescue group. Those decisions may lead to seeking out breeder. We won’t debate your possible decisions, or the merits of rescuing versus buying a dog. We do understand that one size does not fit all. If you are seeking a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, we hope you will consider getting one that has not had it’s tail docked. We hope that you will consider Pembroke Tails in your decision process.

  • AKC Standards

The American Kennel Club (AKC) stands by their docked tail standards for a number of breeds, Pembroke Welsh Corgis included. Their logic is working dogs need docked tails for safety. In 2008 the American Veterinary Medical Association opposed tail docking for cosmetic purposes, and encouraged elimination of the alteration from the AKC standards. If you follow the logic, and your dog won’t be herding animals, or part of a police force, there’s no reason to tail dock. But AKC judges can disqualify a show dog for nonconformance with the standard. Tails are fine for Cardigan Welsh Corgis, but not for Pembrokes, even though they both are traditionally working dogs. Seems pretty random, and time to make some changes.

  • Healthy Pups Raised in the Home

Pembroke Tails is a small professional breeder that raises puppies in the home. While waiting to go to their new homes, the pups will be provided with hands on care, lots of love, and early age appropriate training. They will be introduced to all sorts of people, indoor and outdoor activities. a variety of noises and house breaking through the Puppy Culture program . They will be up to date on vaccinations and deworming, and be microchipped. The parents have completed genetic testing for Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), Von Willebrand Disease (VWD) and Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) and are “triple clear”, Triple clear indicates the parents do not have any DNA deformities for the three most prominent genetic diseases identified in Pembrokes. Since the parents are clear, the puppies cannot inherit the defect, and are also clear by parentage. The litter will be registered with the AKC and a health guarantee will be provided.
